Preventing Flu and Viruses

It’s that time of year when colds, flu and other viruses are prevalent.  Advanced Pediatrics would like to remind parents that antibiotics are NOT effective against viruses, so prevention is the best answer to keeping your family healthy.  We recommend the following tips to help protect your family:

  • Make sure to get your seasonal flu vaccine!
  • Eat well balanced meals and get plenty of rest.
  • Wash hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer frequently. Hands should be washed for 20 seconds.  (Hint:  Have children sing Happy Birthday song two times!)
  • Teach children to turn their heads and cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue, or the inside of their elbow if a tissue is not available. Dispose of used tissues in trash can.
  • Remind children to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth with their hands, and not to share anything that goes into the mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like door knobs, keyboards, phones and toys.
  • Finally, avoid close contact with those who are ill and keep your children home when they are sick!

The Centers for Disease Control recommends that children with flu-like symptoms stay home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medicine).
